What are cockroaches?
Cockroaches are omnivorous insects that often infest areas with lots of humans. We have around 30 types of cockroaches here in Texas, but you are most likely to encounter American cockroaches, German cockroaches, and pale-bordered field roaches.
American cockroaches are by far the largest, clocking in at up to two inches long. Some people call these dark brown roaches "Palmetto bugs," but they are, in fact, cockroaches. German cockroaches are tiny, typically tan to light brown, and have two parallel stripes that run from the base of the head to the start of the wings. These are the fastest breeders of any common pest cockroach.
Finally, pale-bordered field roaches, or firefly roaches, get their nickname from the fact that they kind of resemble a firefly. They have almost black bodies, reddish-brown heads and thoraxes, and a pale stripe running the perimeter of their bodies. Reach out to us today for pest control in Round Rock and surrounding areas.
Are cockroaches dangerous?
The diseases cockroaches carry are the thing that makes them one of the most dangerous pests you can get in your house. Cockroaches, no matter the species, contaminate everything they touch because they hang out in places like sewage drains, garbage dumps, and even rotting carcasses. This is why they spread serious illnesses like:
- Typhoid fever
- E. coli infections
If you have an infestation of cockroaches in your house, you run the risk of being exposed to one of these illnesses and many more.
Why do I have a cockroach problem?
Cockroach infestations are some of the hardest pest problems to prevent because cockroaches are so highly motivated to get into our homes. They eat the same things we do, they often need us for moisture during droughts, and they definitely need us for climate control during intense heat waves and hard freezes. This means cockroach problems can happen to anyone, and they can happen any time of the year.
Where will I find cockroaches?
As a general rule, cockroaches do not like to come into contact with people. They are excellent at keeping out of our way, so you may not ever see one, even if you have a serious infestation. If you start seeing live roaches in places like your kitchen or bathrooms, you likely have a significant cockroach problem.
To catch infestations early, you will want to look for signs of cockroaches instead of live roaches. Signs include a foul or musty odor, smear marks from roaches crawling through water, cockroach droppings, egg capsules, or shed exoskeletons.
How do I get rid of cockroaches?
The reality is that getting rid of cockroaches is incredibly difficult once you have an infestation. This is due to a variety of factors, including their breeding speed, their legendary toughness, and the difficulties of cockroach identification. Cockroaches are so sneaky that people typically do not identify a cockroach problem until it is too late to keep it from ballooning out of control.
This means if you suspect you have cockroaches in your Round Rock home, you need to immediately call the professionals at EvoFoam Pest Control for help with home pest control and commercial pest control. We can help you get rid of disease-ridden roaches and make sure they're gone for good. So don't waste your time with ineffective amateur cockroach control products. Contact the friendly neighborhood professionals just around the corner.
How can I prevent cockroaches in the future?
The good news is that it's a lot easier to keep cockroaches away than it is to get rid of them after you already get an infestation. It's all about cutting off access to the things drawing them into your home. To cut off food access, you'll want to keep all garbage cans on your property tightly covered and store all foods, including pet foods, either in airtight containers or in the fridge.
To cut off water access, you will want to fix drainage, condensation, and leak issues around your property. You can also physically block cockroach entry by sealing off cracks and holes in your home's exterior. But remember if these sneaky and determined pests get into your home anyway, you don't have to take an infestation lying down. Call the experts here at EvoFoam Pest Control.
